One word. Much power. Yet, no one likes this word. It’s a word that everyone woman fears. And a word that every man hates. It means not being beautiful, interesting, or pleasing : not attractive. It strikes at all our hearts.
To hear your not attractive, or your skills, gifts, children, marriage, house, church, or even faith is unattractive would make for a bad day. For most this would be devastating.
Because of the fear of this mighty word people have done everything to be attractive. Unfortunately, more often than not, people’s pursuit of overcoming unattractiveness is an outward kind of work. It’s making things look attractive, when underneath it’s a mess. Underneath there is a shattered heart that fears anyone knowing just how unattractive they really are.
As a result, we look at people and make an assessment. We run through an exterior credential check and then run a personal analysis of them. It wouldn’t matter if it was Jesus himself, we do this. In fact, so did people in Jesus’ time. They kept saying: ‘Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say: “I have come down from heaven”?’
Basically, Jesus was unattractive to them. He was a carpenter. A son of 2 locals whom they have known their whole lives. To them, on the outside, Jesus was unattractive. To hear these 2 words (Jesus+Unattractive) in the same sentence seems unimaginable. But Jesus is attractive. All that Jesus is is attractive. His love, mercy, grace, peace, compassion is amazingly attractive!
The lesson for us is simple. We must not fall prey to use our outward check list to determine a persons attractiveness. As Christians we know that the most attractive part of all of us is Christ. Let Christ in others be what draws you to value them. Let Christ make others attractive. Let Christ be what makes you attractive.
Sing Worship to “Beautiful Jesus”
Your love o God, displayed for us
As crimson covered over sinless hands
Your majesty for all to see
In raging storms and quiet cloudless days
Beautiful Jesus, beautiful Savior
Nothing is greater, brilliant creator
Friend of mine
Your powerful above this world
The universe is under Your command
Your glory shines a holy light
That leads our hearts to praise
Your holy name is on our lips
Beautiful Jesus, beautiful Savior
Nothing is greater, brilliant creator
Friend of mine
Perfect in power, matchless in glory
Nothing is greater, brilliant creator
Friend of mine
My lips will sing, my heart will bring
Praise to You, the holy king
Your love o God, displayed for us
As crimson covered over sinless hands
Your majesty for all to see
Renewed Truth: John 6:42-51 So the Jews kept murmuring about him, because he said: ‘I am the bread which came down from heaven.’ They kept saying: ‘Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say: “I have come down from heaven”?’ Jesus answered: ‘Stop murmuring to each other. No one can come to me except the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. It stands written in the prophets: “And all will be taught by God.” Everyone who has listened and learned from my Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God—he has seen the Father. This is the truth I tell you—he who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and died. This is the bread of life which comes down from heaven that a man may eat of him and not die. I am the bread of life which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever.’
