Observations on holiness

Have you ever noticed how so many in the world are trying to be different? To be truly famous today means trying to be obscenely different. Whether it’s how you dress, how you talk, or what you do. Seemingly, no real talent is required or no real skill. It is comprised of just striving to be different for the purpose to be seen.

It seems that so often this is not only true of those in the world, it’s also seems true of those who call themselves Christians. To be holy as a Christian today means boycotting certain events, speaking hatred towards certain movies, and condemning certain styles. It seems very rarely today does Christianity point not to one’s own holiness but the One who is holy, God.

There is no one like God. Who else would see all that we do and  hear all that we say and yet be willing to love us? Who would know your every thought and yet be willing to offer you forgiveness? Who would come to their own creation and buy them back even after they rejected them? Only the one true God of all the universe.

Here is a picture of Gods holiness taken from Revelations 4. A scene of beauty bursts forth. A light so bright and beautiful washes the room.  The light has a warmth that can be felt. But its better than the sun. It warms me to the core. This light is unique. It does not blind, but it illuminates the absolute unique scene that is unfolded. Words fail to explain, but all that can be seen looks like nothing I’ve seen before. All I can think is “Wow, this is the most awesome thing that I have ever experienced.” All I can hear is Holy! Holy! Holy! The Lord God Almighty!  Tears of joy and peace flood my eyes. I stand in awe of the one I see, I now know who this is. This is God.

Although God is more beautiful than anything we’ve ever seen; is more powerful than anything we can imagine; and more faithful than we can comprehend, he has chosen to share his Holiness with us. God’s holiness came to us through his son Jesus Christ. By Christ’s sacrifice that was made for us we are viewed by God as holy. (Ephesians 1:4)

The greatest struggle in man’s heart to reveal God’s holiness is through their attitudes. There will be many Christians tomorrow Who wear the right clothes, say the right words, and do the right things. But unfortunately there will be far too many who do it all with the wrong attitude.

1 Samuel 16:7 tells us that God does not look at the outward appearance but he looks at the heart. Will our hearts reveal our humility combined with the beauty of the Creator God? Will we be going to work tomorrow not asking what our boss owes us but rather what we owe them? Will we wake up and see our spouses face and think of ways that we can reveal God’s love to them?

God’s holiness is revealed through us when our hearts are transformed to think in the same loving way as he does. Luke 6:40 tells us that the student will be fully taught when they become like the master. Our master is Jesus and we need to not only pursue the actions of Christ but more importantly the attitude of Christ. Philippians 2
